Ten Years of Listening to My Gut - RE:TREAT
Have you ever made a decision that quietly changed your relationship with your body?

In August 2016, I booked my first colonic hydrotherapy session with Helen O’Brien. I didn’t fully know what to expect - only that I wanted to feel lighter, clearer, and more connected to my health.
It wasn’t dramatic. It wasn’t a “new me in 30 days” story. It just started as one visit.
But something shifted.
Knowing I had the appointment encouraged me to eat more consciously beforehand. Afterwards, I felt lighter! Not just physically, but mentally too. It was as though I had made space inside myself.
And that space felt empowering.
Fast forward to today 2026 (10 years later!), I still visit Helen!
I’ve continued to visit regularly, at least twice a year, this is part of my personal health routine. For me, it’s not about extremes. It’s about maintenance. Awareness. Listening to my body before it shouts.
After each visit, I replenish with good bacteria and nourishing foods. It feels like a reset, a reminder that my body is always working for me, and I can support it in return.
Over the years, I’ve learned that health isn’t about perfection. It’s about tending to yourself with consistency and care.
Sometimes loving yourself looks like wild swimming. Sometimes it looks like rest. And sometimes, it looks like booking an appointment.
This is just my experience, part of my ongoing journey of learning what makes me feel balanced, clear, and aligned.
From digestive resets to sound healing baths, this reflection shares how one appointment evolved into a decade of tuning into gut instinct, vibration, and personal wellbeing.
We all have different paths.
Why I Chose Colonic Hydrotherapy
In 2014, I was becoming more aware of what I was putting into my body, physically and energetically. I had spent most of my life eating processed foods, living fast, and not really listening to my digestion.
I chose colonic hydrotherapy because I wanted a reset. Not as a “quick fix,” but as a way to support my body in clearing what no longer felt aligned.
For me, I was researching and I was curious of the effects and body awareness.
Benefits of Colonic Hydrotherapy:
Encourage bowel movement regularity
Create a feeling of lightness
Promote awareness of gut health
Mentally clearer afterwards
Where Did It Originate?
Ancient Egyptian texts reference bowel cleansing practices.
The Greeks practiced forms of internal cleansing.
Modern colonic hydrotherapy developed more formally in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Europe and the United States.

Why I Still Go...
For me, it’s less about “detox” and more about:
Listening to my body
Maintaining digestive awareness
Taking intentional pauses for health
Combining physical reset with practices like sound healing
It’s become part of my rhythm, twice a year or more, like a seasonal check-in.
If you’re curious about exploring your own version of a reset, I encourage you to have a conversation with a trusted practitioner (I trust Helen, she is wonderful) and listen to what feels aligned for you. Whether it’s through physical cleansing or vibrational healing, what matters most is tuning into your body and honouring its needs. It may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with certain medical conditions. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before trying new treatments.
