August 2015

I decided to quit white processed sugar.

Scott (my soul mate) decided to join me on this journey, he said "Let's see what happens?"

I understood the health benefits of not having sugar in my diet, what I didn't realise, was how I would feel.

We both quit white processed sugar, which required much research and a few documentries of encouragement (That Sugar Film).. to finally be ready.

In order to discourage the sugar cravings, I needed to go 1 week without any sugar. No natural fruit sugar either. This was difficult for the first day, and understandably, over 80% of the food in supermarket have added sugar.

The second day became more difficult with mild to strong headaches, pressure building inside my head. This was uncomfortable, but I knew I needed to push through it.

The third day was the worst, headaches increased and I felt like I was overcoming an extremely illegal drug. I had to keep hydrated more than ever, consuming plenty of fresh filtered water.

Then gradually the headaches eased, my mind cleared, and I felt more energised.

The way I can describe this feeling, is though a fog had been lifted from my vision.

I felt focused and clear, ready to face any challenges that come my way!

It was an incredible experience. One I will never forget and always cherish.

Relapses

Of course, December 2015 came, the time of Christmas.... Food!

I was offered so many different sugar foods, I declined most...

Until Scott's Grandparents gave us a slice of M&S cheesecake each. We took the cake home.

We both didn't want to eat it, knowing the side effects, we looked at one another, and thought "Hey, why not try it..." After all, it had been 5 months of no processed sugar, what's the worst that could happen?

Well, as soon as I ate the first mouthful, I felt sick, the sugar sensation clenched my cheeks.. my stomach churned - Instant regret.

Scott however couldn't stop eating it, the sugar had lit up his brain, he just couldn't stop.

He then fell very ill afterwards, more so than me.

I also ate home baked ginger bread men, thinking I could create a 'mind over matter' experience, and that the sugar wouldn't harm me. Even though I strongly believed it wouldn't affect me, I felt the sugar rush, throughout my body... I was in so much pain for the rest of the day. I knew then, that experiment taught me, this is poison, do not digest ever again.

It's incredible to know the feeling within, especially after having a 'break' from certain foods.

So even though a few mistakes happened on the journey to removing processed sugar from my diet, I can now say in 2021 I have not had white processed sugar for over 6 years.

A happy achievement I strive on continuing, because natural sugar feels amazing!

Also, the picture speaks for itself, sugar lights up the same part of the brain as cocaine. So think about the crazy, scatty feeling you get from a sugar high? It's because you are high...
